Self Care Days.

Oh, how this time of the year confuses me.  Those few days that fall between Christmas and New Year, especially if Christmas has fallen on a weekend, confound the best of us.  It is at this time that self care is vital.  Even if you do not celebrate any kind of holiday during December the hustle and bustle is all around you and you just cannot escape it, leaving fraught feelings and frayed tempers in its wake.

Today I had to have a self care day.  Before anyone shrieks in horror at the sheer decadence of my actions I want you to ponder this; there is nothing selfish about taking some time out to promote well being and that is exactly what self care is all about.   The busy schedule that I have inflicted upon myself ever since mid-October is taking its toll on me now and I just had to have a day off.  This got me thinking about how, when I have been bedridden in the past, what I have done to promote well being for myself.  This is no mean feat I can assure you.  Regular readers will know I have several things that ail me, and at least three of them can lay me up for weeks at a time.  I was reminded of bedridden days today when I scratched my head in confusion over what day of the week it actually is.  I was reminded that self care is a necessity and we owe it to ourselves to look after us first and foremost.  Even when we are too sick to get out of bed, we can do as little as having a window open for a little while, letting in much needed fresh air.

At this time of the year our lives can begin to feel quite toxic, maybe we have had to endure endless rounds of socialising when all we really want is to curl up with a good book.  Maybe we have over indulged and our bodies are starting to feel sluggish from too much Christmas cheer.  Self care is vital at such a time.  A walk in nature.  A relaxing bath.  Meditation. Yoga. Relaxing with family or friends, or both.  It doesn’t matter what it is that we do, the important thing is to be kind and soothing to ourselves in a way that feels loving.

During the past year I have been working a lot on self care and I have noticed that my life is all the better for it.  In the beginning I was called selfish, but I dug my heels in and refused to budge.  Taking some time out for yourself each and every day is vital for your spiritual, mental and physical well being and we should never feel guilty for doing that.   As we approach the New Year and the time of resolutions, maybe you should resolve to carve out some time for yourself each and every day, even if it is only five minutes.  Self love and self care may be en vogue right now, but taking care of ourselves is something we should be taking seriously and not just doing because it seems to be the latest buzz word.
