Heatwave!!!

The UK has been enjoying (or not, depends on your perspective) a heatwave. Most countries call this summer, but here in the UK we are prone to wetter summers, especially in the North and in Scotland.

Social media is awash with posts and pics of people enjoying the glorious weather. For quite a lot of people the warm and sunny weather certainly helps to lift their mood and their enjoyment of life is obvious.

But if you, or anyone you know, has a chronic illness then the prolonged heat can make life pretty miserable for you. Even quite dangerous. Alas, the same people (not all I must add) who have regaled us all on social media with their happy heatwave posts have taken to social media to castigate anyone who dares to moan about the hot weather.

For me personally my asthma has really been triggered. My IBS is flaring badly and my joints are sore and swollen due to the rising humidity. I’m also diabetic, which means the rising temperatures can make my blood glucose levels sky rocket – even when a healthy diet and exercise regime is being adhered to.

Other people have heart conditions and this can cause a flare up of angina type symptoms. Other heart conditions can be triggered during the extreme heat a heatwave brings and this often requires the person to receive hospital treatment.

It’s understandable that people who are chronically ill do not enjoy the extreme temperatures. It’s understandable that they feel miserable. They aren’t trying to spoil it for those people who enjoy such weather, they are struggling to cope due to a chronic illness or condition.

During the hot weather we should be aware of the wildlife around us, making sure that any animal we see has access to water to drink and to cool down. The same for our pets, make sure they have plenty of water available and ensure they have a cool, shady area inside or out. And I know it’s a no brainier, but please, please do not leave dogs in hot cars. They can become very ill really quickly and can actually die from the heat.

For those who enjoy the sun and heat, have fun.

For those who don’t, I hope you find relief.

  1. I totally agree with you. I have issues with my hips which, although at first seemed better with the warmth, are now feeling more painful with the humidity. I work with the elderly and I see issues on a daily basis, but my ‘friends’ just tell me to stop moaning. So glad I have found a kindred spirit!!
